“Digital storytelling about food” A BIG and RBGE collaboration
Inequality, culture and knowledge all create barriers to nutritious food, but many communities and individuals are striving to overcome them.
The Big Picnic is an EU funded project to explore the global challenge of food security using participatory methods to co-create resources. As one of the 16 botanic garden partners in Europe and Uganda, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, worked with people interested in access to nutritious food.
The digital storytelling method was chosen with the help of local food initiatives. It gives people a quick way to develop and record a personal story using their photos and creativity, using standard software on iPads. It has proved a powerful way to include the views of local people about what food means to them.
In May and June 2018 four informal group workshops were run at BIG Farmhouse to engage and recruit people who might have a story to tell about what food means to them. After a delicious lunch shared with the volunteer group, participants developed their stories with help from Andy, Max and Sabine from RBGE. Four personal stories were produced and with others are part of an exhibition resource that adds to debate on food in Scotland and we hope stimulates further discussion.
